Books are deceptively dense. A box that looks modest can hit 40 lb, and the two things that go wrong are always the same: the box fails under its own weight, or the corners get crushed because there was no padding.

Box small, not big
The instinct is to use one large box. Do the opposite. Small boxes filled completely are far stronger than a large box half packed, and they stay under the weight where cardboard starts to fail. Aim for 30–40 lb per box.
Packing method
Stand books upright with spines against the side of the box, exactly as they sit on a shelf, or lay them flat in stacks. Never pack them spine-up with the pages taking the weight — that is what breaks bindings. Fill every gap so nothing can shift, and add a layer of padding on the top and bottom.
Rare, signed and collectible
For a valuable single volume, wrap it in acid-free paper, then bubble wrap, then a rigid box with at least two inches of clearance all round. Add the declared value at booking and consider the covered handling option, which keeps the shipment out of the weather entirely.
Libraries, schools and sellers
Regular volume gets quoted as freight on a pallet rather than as individual parcels, which is dramatically cheaper past a few hundred pounds. Tell us the total weight and we will work out which is better for you.

How heavy should each box be?
Aim for 30–40 lb. Heavier than that and the box itself becomes the weak point, however well you pack the contents.
Is it cheaper to send one big shipment or several parcels?
Almost always one shipment. Our rate per pound drops at every weight band, so combining boxes onto one booking costs less than booking each separately.
Can you collect from a storage unit?
Yes, as long as somebody can meet the driver there during the facility’s opening hours to hand over and sign.
